I had been a practicing Muslim (Sufi dervish) for a while. I had practiced Buddhism in one way or another since childhood. 2001 I took Buddhist vows in synch with my dervish vows (which are very congruent). What turned out to not be congruent were some of the structural issues between the Vedic and the Prophetic traditions.

But that was last years crisis... I'm way over that.

I have another crisis now. Its regarding this issue of being "in the world, but not of the world".

I'm finding it less and less sustainable. Furthermore, I'm starting to wonder about a few of the fine points of things. I'm beginning to feel like I wasn't meant for this world at all, yet here I am.

How can one be in this world yet not of it?

This group is for the discussion of beliefs, methods, and practices related to the Ascension Paradigm (also known as the New Age movement), as experienced by those who primarily identify as Neo-Pagans.

Topics that are appropriate include sacred geometry, DNA activation / recoding, ETs, channelling, Ascension, Light Body activation, merkaba, angels, vibrational healing, interstellar astral travel, etc - however they will be approached from the perspectives of Pagans.

There is a growing interest in many aspects and theories surrounding the Ascension Paradigm within the Pagan community, but many do not feel that they resonate with the New Age context. This group will serve as a platform for interested Pagans to gather and discuss Ascension practices in an environment that is more familiar and comfortable. How these practices and beliefs fit into the NeoPagan paths will also be a consistently revisted theme.

Interested parties are encouraged to read "Ascension Magick" by Christopher Penczak for a fantastic introduction to the Ascension Paradigm for Pagans, including many meditations and practical exercises.

This list will serve as a safe-zone for Pagans to discuss New Age-elements that often are met with intolerance in other mainstream Pagan forums.

Celestial-Terrestial Astrology, through Mark S. McNutt
Regarding April, 06

Soli-Lunar updates, following the unfolding of the year’s potential one lunar month at a time.
This month’s lunation begins with a Solar Eclipse on 3/29 at 2:15 am pst. While not visible on this side of the globe (as it’s nighttime), a Solar Eclipse is always powerful, as are the days before, when the emotional energy is building, and the days after, when there is a release into the new. There is usually a dark emotional aura in the air under the balsamic dark moon right before a Solar Eclipse that peaks and releases under the New Moon (always the same moment as the eclipse’s peak). The dynamic is that the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon and Earth together pull on the water and electricity of our bodies, creating and releasing a lot of “Num”, Ki, or stored energy. (Num is a term for dynamic energy of any extreme). Eclipse times align powerful forces of emotion and creativity, but are difficult to harness and can be overwhelming (especially if they occur right around your birthday or even the exact the opposite time of the year).
Traditionally, eclipses predicted the downfall of rulers and it was a central part of the court astrologer’s job to anticipate any eclipse that would be influential in the ruler’s horoscope. For us, living as rulers of our own lives and destinies, these eclipses are a somewhat uncomfortable and dramatic release into the new. They can also move lots of stuck or atrophied energy and can be welcoming to those who appreciate change.
As this is the first New Moon of the zodiacal year, (Sun and Moon in Aries), there will be an intense and sudden shift into Spring, with spontaneous and immediate resolution of setting sudden and unexpected plans into motion.
But Aries is impulsive and unpredictable, maybe also unreliable, and to attempt to control the fiery release of all of this energy may be a little like herding cats. There may be frustration resulting from personal will being thwarted, also sudden explosions, tempers flaring, arguments, and some impulsive decisions that could be regretted later. It’s fairly auspicious for fire sign people but more frustrating for earth signs especially Capricorn, and very emotional for water signs, especially Cancer. The water signs have a more positive flow during the middle of the month.
Pluto also begins it’s 5 month retrograde 3/29, meaning it appears to move backwards from earthly view. During it’s stationary times (mid March to mid April and again late August to early September) there is an aura of great change in the air which is bathed in anticipation, but with little substantial progress made until the eclipse moves your mountains. And sometimes the transformation provides travel and freedom opportunities while for some others, this aspect can bring forth an abundance of work to be accomplished.
Mercury is coming out of retrograde, which means the mental fog and derailed communications should begin to come together and move forward. Since Mercury is in Pisces, intuition and emotion are key to successful communicating and timing.
At the end of March, Venus is in conjunction with Neptune in Aquarius. This is great for expanding dreams of community through positive and idealistic social interaction. In fact, this is a surprisingly positive time for moving forward with your social agenda, widening circles, sharing dreams, and balancing social life with personal reflection time and solitude.
During the middle of the month, and right after the Full Moon, Venus enters Pisces and Mars enters Cancer, which will bring up emotional issues and potential release in areas of love, sex, affection, and more personal bonding in social life. This is excellent for water signs especially, but a little steamy for fire signs.
Ignite your fires into the spring! Leap forwards into the unknown! Go beyond fear and release yourself from the past.

Astrology works on many levels and we can peel back the layers to revel ever-deeper aspects of ourselves and the truth of our being. If you would like to have a deeper reading of how these and other planetary transits affect you, contact me, Mark S. McNutt, for a personal reading.
Mark S. McNutt has been practicing and teaching Astrology professionally since 1972 and is available for personal readings, tutoring, and group classes and presentations at 541-964-5341 or through www.aerious.org.

>>
(a) number of Christians are regularly attending different churches in the course of a week or a month, picking and choosing among programs and services, to satisfy social and spiritual needs. They are comfortable participating in multiple churches.

The practice is particularly pronounced among young people, sociologists of religion say. Everyone in a family may attend one church for a service on Sunday, but the children then go their own way to youth groups, for example.

In a survey of 13- to 17-year-olds conducted from 2002 through 2003, the National Study of Youth and Religion found that 16 percent of respondents participated in more than one religious congregation. Four percent attend youth groups outside their congregations.

Some critics, particularly conservative evangelicals and the ministers of various denominations, decry such practices as a consumerist approach to faith.

But sociologists say it is a growing practice, a reflection of how Americans today are less attached to a historical, family denomination.

Parents also want their children to have an "authentic" relationship to faith, and "if you don't choose it, it's not authentic for you," said Christian Smith, a professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina and director of the survey on youth and religion. <<

OUTH BEND -- With his latest CD, "Egypt," Youssou N'Dour has revolutionized the sound of music coming from Africa. The Senegalese musician's use of music from Egypt and Senegal, along with unmistakable Western influences, stands at the forefront of what is usually termed "World Music."

With lyrical messages of Sufi Islam at its core, the music on "Egypt" has burst to life as an emphatically enjoyable sound. As performed Sunday night at the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts, N'Dour's new music is challenging, spiritual and deeply rewarding. It bears little resemblance to even his own previous work, so even those familiar with N'Dour's older recordings were hearing something entirely new.

The musicians on the stage exuded an easy geniality. Playing lovely, complicated, important new music with the relaxed vibe of a jam session, they avoided the scowling solemnity of a New Music recital or prayer meeting, even though it was both of those, too.
A Mystical Dialogue between Islam and Judaism
Two Bay Area mystics, an Imam and a Rabbi, who are close friends, share insights into their respective spiritual journeys: their divergences and convergences, ascends and descends, and teachers and teachings. This conversation, which is a dialogue that has been taking place between mystics for thousands of years, promises to illuminate how, through our common mystical traditions, we can begin to heal the world's fragmentation.

I am now coming back to the actual reason I started this tribe.

I am a Muslim dervish who has also taken Buddhist vows.

Buddhism is from the Vedic traditions.
Islam is of the Prophetic traditions.

At this point, I feel fine,
but earlier on, I had REAL trouble reconciling the two.

While its popular and clear that ALL religions are of the same essence
I found the language quite different between these two.
I think the reason being is how they envision the Afterlife.

Monotheistic Prophecy presents this idea of Heaven and Hell
(and Catholicism adds Purgatory)
The Vedic traditions rely on an idea of reincarnation.
I will be the first to state, very clearly, that I do not KNOW
exactly what happens to us after we die.
I know there are some of us who have had near death experiences
and there are some who have had past life memories.
The skeptic in me has my doubts
but I still respect what people say about these things.

For me, I reached a crisis point where I was TRYING to follow
the nobility of the Abrahamic traditions, even to the great pains of being
rejected socially and even making economic sacrifices.
Then,
My life had been so structured that I simply saw peoples pain.
I felt my own.
Life was, for lack of a more resonant expression,
a lot of shit.

The voice in my head started to say:
Just cut your losses.
You are emotionally ill-equipped to deal with reality.
Go ahead and end THIS life.
You will be born again.
Nothing gained, nothing lost.

So, I was SERIOUSLY contemplating suicide.
Fortunately, I got some great advice from a Sufi Shaikh
that has me embracing life now
as I never have before.

I am still, however, dealing with the DIFFERENCE
between the Vedic and Prophetic.

I do wonder if anyone here has any reflections or insights on this?

So, i've started a tribe who's focus is more a dialogue of comparison, history, and even "what role is religion in human's life".

I'd love to have anyone who is interested in that aspect of religious discussion join us. We are VERY tiny right now, so it's not exactly a happening place, but I think we can make it a fun tribe that supports a dialogue about religion to pair tribes like this, that discusses the insides of practice. :-)
There is a famous someone in my Sufi order (name not disclosed because his personality sometimes interferes with his message) who wrote an important note about Ganesha.

He said that the story of Ganesha is the SAME archetype as the Greek Oedipus Rex. The difference, however, is significant.

As Freud correctly pointed out, the Oedipal complex underlies much of societys unease. What Freud meant was Western society (we can forgive him this eurocentricism, considering where he was and what his work was). This dervish I am talking about tells us that the difference between the two has to do with LOVE.

In the Oedipal version of this archetypal story, Oedipus unwittingly kills his father and marries (and has sex with) his mother. He is anguished by this and pokes out his eyes. Yes. Tragic.

In the Ganesha story, the father leaves, comes back to find this handsome young diety standing guard at the door of his house. That young deity is none other than our beloved Ganesha. Ganesha doesn't know that this is his father nor does the father recognize his own son. Ganesha is merely guarding his mothers home and well-being (as a good son would). Ganesha is decapitated by his father, Shiva.

At this point, Paravati, Ganesha's mother, sees what happens and wails in horror and anguish. Shiva then understands what he's done. He panics and looks about for a head to replace the severed head of his son. There is only an elephant, so he takes the head of the elephant and puts it upon his sons body and resurrects him.

From then on, Ganesha had the head of an elephant. This is the image of Ganesha that we are familiar with. This zoomorphic form is that of a wounded and even monsterous son, and yet Ganesha is STILL the good guy he was and actually becomes the most beloved of the Hindu pantheon.

(interesting side note: the Hindu, like the ancient Egyptians, did not place ones essential self in the head, but rather the heart)

The dervish I speak of tells us that the Ganesha story is an ANTIDOTE for the self-loathing, self-hating, and frankly, perverse take on this internal archetypical condition.

Where Oedipus is filled with self-hatred, Ganesha is filled with light. Even his father, Shiva, through his love of his son, cultivates something wonderful out of something tragic (his is, after all, a deity). There is a strong element of redemption and forgiveness.

As stories go on about Ganesha, we see that he, not having any self-loathing, goes on to achieve the most wonderous victories in Hindu legend. Even the fact of his "deformity" comes to aid him in his sublime intentions.

We can heal this Oedipal wound with the salve of knowlege. Looking at the Ganesha story is a healing experience. This self-hatred underlies much of what Western civilization is about.

These transpersonal tools we have been given are a chance to heal, to find joy and to evolve past the horror we've felt existentially trapped in.

Hi,

I am passing this on:

PLEASE PLEASE HELP....HE HAS GIVEN US ALL SO MUCH...

Subject: Ram Dass

Please read it over, and if you are so moved, respond to Dr. Wayne
Dyer's request.

BE HERE for him, NOW drwaynedyer.com/articles/

One of the truly great men of our time needs our help. I write these
words to encourage your generosity and support. Back in the 1960's a
Harvard professor named Richard Alpert left behind the hectic world
of academia and business and traveled to India- there he was to meet
his spiritual teacher who gave him a new purpose to fulfill along with a
new name. He is of course Ram Dass.

His guru told him love everyone, feed people and see God everywhere.
Ram Dass became a person who lived out this mandate - he did what so
many of us could only dream. He connected to his spirit and devoted his
life to serving others.

In 1969 he wrote and published the signature book on spirituality
and applied higher awareness, Be Here Now. In keeping with his
commitment to love everyone and feed people, he donated all of the royalties
and profits to a foundation that did, and does just that. With millions
of dollars at stake, Ram Dass simply chose to live his life as a man of
service to God. After years spent in India in pursuit of a higher more
enlightened consciousness for himself and for our troubled world, he
returned to the United States to lecture throughout the country. He
spoke to packed venues wherever he went, and as always he donated
the proceeds to such causes as would keep him in harmony with his
mandate to serve. He co-founded the Seva Foundation ( www.seva.org )
where all of the monies were earmarked to fulfill his mission. Ram Dass and his
writing and lecture fees were the primary sources for this inspirational work.

To me Ram Dass was and is the finest speaker I have ever heard, period!
He was my role model on stage; always gentle and kind, always
speaking without notes from his heart, sharing his inspiring stories and
always with great humor. I tell you this from my own heart; I could listen
to his lectures for hours and always felt saddened when they would end.
He was the voice for Applied Spirituality - his life was the model. When he was
threatened by having his own private sexual preference exposed, in a time when a
closet was the only place that was even mildly safe, Ram Dass called a press
conference and proudly announced his preference to the world. He is a hero to
everyone who ever lived in fear of any kind of spiteful exposure. He paved the way
for tolerance and love when no one else would dare to do so. Most of us could only
dream of defying the conventional life and living out our inner callings to promote a
cause that was bigger than our own lives - to leave the security of a
guaranteed career - to leave a country where comfort was ensured; all to live in a
foreign land with few conveniences, traveling and meditating for a more peaceful
world. It is what St. Francis did in the 13th century and what Ram Dass did in our
lifetime.

When Ram Dass' own father, who had largely criticized his son's passion as well as
his unconventional lifestyle, was close to death, Ram Dass devoted himself to 100%
service in those final years. He fed his father, he bathed his father, he placed him on
and off the toilet until the day he died. Why? Because he felt this was his mandate. He
wanted to experience true service on a 24/7 basis and know firsthand the joy that
comes from giving one's own life away in the service of others.
Always, for over 30 years, Ram Dass was in the service of others.

In 1997 Ram Dass was struck by a semi-paralyzing stroke and was forced to live in a
wheelchair. Still he wrote of his adventure in a powerful book titled, Still Here. He
continued to travel, though he could no longer walk, and continued to speak to
audiences, though he spoke from a slowed down body but still he did it to serve
others.

Now it is our turn... Ram Dass' body can no longer endure the rigors of travel. He has
come to Maui, where I live and write. I speak with him frequently and I am often
humbled by the tears in his beautiful 73-year-old eyes as he apologizes for not having
prepared for his own elderly health care - for what he now perceives as burdensome to
others. He still intends to write and teach; however without the travel - we can now
come to Maui's healing - Maui is where Ram Dass wishes to stay for now! He is
currently living in a home on Maui, which he doesn't own and is currently in jeopardy
of losing.
I am asking all of you to help purchase this home and to set up a financial foundation
to take care of this man who has raised so much money to ensure the futures of so
many others. No one is more deserving of our love and financial support. In the end
these donations will help ensure that Ram Dass and his work will reach another
generation or remind a current generation that it is in giving that we receive.

If there has ever been a great spirit who lived in our lifetime, literally devoting his life
to the highest principles of spirit, it has been Ram Dass. I love this man; he has been
my inspiration and the inspiration for millions of us. It is now time to show him how
we feel by doing what he has taught all of us to do - Just , BE HERE for him, NOW.

Please send your donations to: Ram Dass c/o Hay House P.O. Box 5100 Carlsbad, CA 92018

In love and light,
(signed) Wayne Dyer

I am the sincere practitioner of two religions and I've been doing so for a while. Recently I had to deal with a VERY difficult ordeal regarding a surprising incongruency between the two theologies. I posted strands to other spiritual tribes with varying results. One tribe actaully BOOTED me. I came up with some interesting responses, but this ordeal has made me realize that those of us who's faith is in more than one tradition need our own forum to discuss the challenges and compare notes.
